FLEGT in Vietnam
Initial dialogue has included the establishment of a government inter-agency FLEGT working group and the planning for a multi-stakeholder dialogue. In May 2010, a high-level meeting took place between Vietnam and the EU to discuss next steps with respect to the FLEGT VPA process. Formal negotiations opened in November 2010.
Due to Vietnam being a timber processing country rather than a producer, a VPA with this country would need to take into account other governance and trade elements than VPAs with timber producing countries.
A key concern for VPA talks with this country is the involvement of civil society, a basic principle underpinning FLEGT and an understood precondition for a successful VPA.
