Initial dialogue has included the establishment of a government inter-agency FLEGT working group and the planning for a multi-stakeholder dialogue. In May 2010, a high-level meeting took place between Vietnam and the EU to discuss next steps with respect to the FLEGT VPA process. Formal negotiations opened in November 2010.

 

Due to Vietnam being a timber processing country rather than a producer, a VPA with this country would need to take into account other governance and trade elements than VPAs with timber producing countries.

The VNGO&FLEGT Network was formulated in January 2012 and currently consists of 20 non-governmental organizations, and research institutes and development centers from several universities nationwide. Represented for the network is a Core Group consisting of fourorganisations: the Centre of Research and Development in Upland Areas (CERDA), the Centre for Sustainable Development in Mountainous Areas (CSDM), People and Nature Reconciliation (PanNature) and the Centre for Sustainable Rural Development (SRD).
